I'd suggest you trust your layman's judgment on such things, because the experts have convinced themselves that all of the many very obvious examples of Western cultural traditions can be deconstructed out of existence. The Aristotelian tradition is a good example of a line of thought that, with many changes (of course), can be traced from ancient Greece through the Middle Ages (Aquinas and others), and into the 20th century (virtue ethics).
